Discreet and effective
I love this gate! We use it to block the stairwell to our lower level so that the dog won't set off the motion detectors when the security alarm is set. We previously had an unsightly metal baby gate that's opening was so narrow that some visitors had to turn sideways to get through. The Kiddy Guard is great because it's barely noticeable when it's not in use.
I read some comments that people were dissatisfied with the noise the gate makes when it is pulled out. I've found that the gate does NOT make noise if you unlock it before pulling it out. It's an easy fix - just remember to push down and turn the lock first.
The one thing that purchasers should be aware of is that both the device and the latch must be attached fully flush from top to bottom. That means that if you have a baseboard on the wall where the gate will be installed, you'll need to procure (and probably paint) a vertical piece of wood the same thickness as the baseboard and attach it to the...
Do not recommend. Ever.
We have these gates installed at both the top and bottom of a steep staircase. We bought all the additional parts sold by the gate company to safely install it. The one at the top of the stairs is the one that has now failed, repeatedly.
First incident: I'm halfway down the stairs, when I hear it start to retract. My 15 month old son is hanging on to the gate as it retracts, and is starting to fall. I had that hyper-aware moment, where everything slooows down. He starts to cartwheel down the stairs, launches... And somehow I catch him. My heart stopped. I am the player you stick in right field. I have no coordination, and am unable to catch anything. Needless to say, since that incident, I am absolutely vigilant about this gate. It is always locked, I always verify (twice!) that it's seated correctly.
Second incident: I am downstairs, and hear the thud and screams of my 18 month old careening down the full flight of stairs. The gate was absolutely locked,...
Looks and works as advertised
Pros:
(1) More stylish than the typical metal bar design
(2) JPMA certified for top-of-the-stairs use
(3) Straight forward to open and close for adults yet still complicated for a toddler
(4) Very rugged and durable
Cons:
(1) Very expensive for a safety gate. There are other retractable gates on the market now for about half the price.
(2) The plastic handle for opening and closing the gate is a little flimsy and awkward to grip.
Note:
If mounting to a baseboard or other wall molding: The gate width cannot be adjusted from top to bottom and there isn't any hardware included in the kit to account for baseboards or other molding on the wall. Therefore a trip to the hardware store for some additional material is required before you can install the gate (adding additional cost).
